Just Stop: 10 Things Everyone Should Stop Saying is written by Heather Nelson. Have you ever been faced with a situation which is so tragic that you are not sure what to say? Do you feel you have to fill the awkward silence and just regurgitate the old clichéd phrases of comfort, knowing they are meaningless? In society today, many of us use these throwaway comments in order not to hear what is actually being said. Discover the effects of using these tired old phrases that offer no comfort, but in reality cause annoyance to the person you are trying to console. With the introduction of the internet, this book explores the need of society to give ill-informed advice and the damage to self-worth it may cause to the recipient. Why do we feel the need to offer simplistic solutions to a person in a crisis? What should we do in these circumstances? This book will make you think before you speak.

I think anyone reading Just Stop by Heather Nelson will nod their head throughout and say to themselves, ‘I say this.’ The author completely hits the nail on the head with her evaluation of many people in society. This book will really make you wonder if you are saying these worn-out phrases of comfort for your own benefit, as a means of making yourself feel good, not understanding how you have left the person in crisis feeling. This is a very well-written book which takes a detailed look into the lack of real empathy for those in crisis. It will make you think, it will make you laugh at your own behaviour and, hopefully, it will trigger society to learn better communication skills, and not be afraid to deal head-on with another person’s grief. I think the author has done an exceptional job of highlighting a subject that is very rarely tackled.”
